• The Fifteen Minute City (FMC) is an Urban Planning Concept (UPC) that promotes reducing car dependency (CD) and sustainable living (HSL).
• FMC includes working, shopping, education, healthcare & leisure (WSEHL) within a 15 minute distance.
• While some support FMC, others are protesting the invasion of privacy and increase in state surveillance.
• Paris has been at the heart of the FMC concept, despite its traffic congestion issues.
• The concept of FMC got the author thinking about past modes of transportation, such as hitchhiking.
• Hitchhiking used to be a common and cost-effective way to travel, but safety concerns have made it largely obsolete.
• Hitchhiking involved holding a cardboard sign and sticking your thumb out to signal for a ride.
• Certain cars were more likely to pick up hitchhikers, such as older models like an Austin Allegro or Ford Cortina.
• Locking eyes with the driver was an effective way to guilt them into stopping for a ride.
• Lorry drivers were often friendly and willing to chat, making for an enjoyable VIP experience.
